The National Weather Service and local governments are issuing the following weather statement for all of Fairfield County CT:
Fairfield County area Fire Managers are advising that elevated fire weather potential continues today. While winds will remain just below red flag criteria today, they will become gusty out of the southwest this afternoon with very low relative humidity values. Extremely low fuel moisture will result in enhanced fire weather behavior. In addition, ignition potential remains very high
It is advised that you check with your local fire department or forestry service before doing any open burning.
This time of year many homeowners are cleaning out brush and dead vegetation left over from last summer and winter. Some homeowners rake, pile and burn to get ready for the coming growing season – in many localities permits are required but in many cases homeowners are not required to get a permit or just don’t think of it as necessary. Always call your local town offices or Fire Department to check in with them about open burning.
I go to Cove Island Park in Stamford regularly and lately folks have already started using the barbeque areas for picnics and family gatherings. If you’ve started any of these activities please be aware of the fire dangers. If you are using your outdoor home BBQ’s. grass, bushes, outdoor plants and trees are very dry. Be aware of your grill and never leave unattended, be especially vigilant, make sure everything is turned off (if gas fueled) or fire completely out ( if using charcoal) before leaving it. You might also want to move your grill away from your house, if it’s too close – protect your home in case something unexpected does happen.
Enjoy the nice spring weather but please be careful!
